Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri: Timings and What to Expect
By Maulik Hospitality Editorial · Updated 2026-08-22
Every evening, thousands of diyas float down the Ganga while bells and conches fill the air at Har Ki Pauri - India's most atmospheric ritual. Here's how to do it right.
Timings
- Held daily at dusk; exact time shifts with sunset - roughly 7:00-7:30 PM in summer, 5:30-6:30 PM in winter.
- Morning aarti exists too (around sunrise) with a fraction of the crowds.
- Confirm same-day timing with your hotel front desk - festivals shift everything.
Getting the Good Spot
Arrive 45-60 minutes early. The ghat fills fast on Ekadashi, Poornima and Kanwar days. Barriers separate men/women near the front; paid viewing platforms and boat-side positions exist for a calmer vantage.
Etiquette & Practicalities
- It is worship first, spectacle second: keep voices low during the actual aarti.
- Buy diya-and-flowers baskets from ghatside vendors (Rs. 10-50) to float afterward; hold the railing while releasing.
- Footwear stands, wet-marble floors, pickpocket-prone crushes near the front - plan accordingly.
Make a Day of It
Morning: Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi rope-ways, Maya Devi en-route. Evening aarti, then dinner back at Hotel Abhyudyam Ganga, minutes from the ghat.
