Golden Temple Amritsar: Darshan, Langar and Etiquette
By Maulik Hospitality Editorial · Updated 2026-08-22
The Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) welcomes over a lakh visitors daily - and unlike most monuments, it never closes. A little preparation turns a crowded visit into a moving one.
When to Go
- Dawn Palki Sahib ceremony (the Guru Granth Sahib's procession to the sanctum, roughly 4-5 AM depending on season) is the most serene experience.
- Evening brings the illuminated sarovar and full kirtan; weekends and Diwali/Vaisakhi draw huge crowds.
- Afternoons are quieter inside despite the heat - marble walks get hot, carry socks.
Etiquette Essentials
- Cover your head (scarves available free at entrances); shoes off at the queue start, feet washed.
- No tobacco, alcohol or intoxicants anywhere in the complex; photography is fine outside the sanctum rope.
- Sit on the floor in the langar hall when served - it is the point; donations voluntary.
The Full Circuit
Jallianwala Bagh is steps away, the Partition Museum at Town Hall two minutes further. Keep an evening for Wagah Border's flag ceremony (~30 km). Base yourself at Hotel Holiday Dreamz for short rides everywhere.
